It’s All About Priorities

Last month I blogged about reverse mentoring, and specifically how some of our younger employees have helped me get up to speed on the latest in fashion, music, technology and, of course, social media.

Ah, yes, social media. It’s a pretty hard thing to escape these days, particularly if you live and work in the world of advertising and marketing.  However, while I recognize its significance, I also live and work in the world of business management, client management and, yes, family management.  Let’s face it, there are only so many hours in a day and learning the nuances of things like Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn can take up an awful lot of those hours.  And that doesn’t even factor in familiarization time with some of the newer social channels, like Pinterest (which I’m very high on) or with helpful business-related applications like Dropbox or YouSendIt. (I’m big fan of those, too.)

As in most areas of life, I’m constantly trying to prioritize what’s really important and what’s not when it comes to social media and new technology.  I’ll bet a lot of you are going through the same thing. If so, I’d love to hear about it – and to get your feedback on my next post next month, which will be a video blog on what social media channels I think fall into the “MUST KNOW” category and which are strictly optional.  Just don’t send it through MySpace.
